I'd Rather

I'll sleep safe in my glass slipper.
Screaming through the door
can't shatter me with fairy dust
on my pillow and if you put your
hand between my legs my unicorn
will kick you and carry me away.
I'd rather turn into a pumpkin
than let you under my covers again.

This was written for the 'daydream believers' prompt Mary Mansfield gave over at Poetry Jam. I didn't expect to go to dark protective daydreams, but I did.  This one isn't autobiographical.

  1. oh snap...bet that unicorn kick does not feel very good....strong voice in this one...and sometimes you just need to draw that line...

  2. Loved all of the Cinderella images you included in this poem, Victoria; but I wonder how much "safe"-ty a glass slipper can offer. I smiled about the unicorn!

    1. Bob commented on that too, that a glass slipper isn't very safe. That was intentional, that all the daydream images just gave the little girl an illusion of safety and that was the best she could do.

  4. Powerful kick of the unicorn is more than enough to indicate the boundaries. It's the fighter that determines the outcome. Great write Victoria!

  15. This did go to a darker place than I expected. Many uses for daydreams. Very strong poem.

  16. The safety of a fragile glass slipper. Made me almost want to cover my eyes before I read the rest, Victoria.
